The chromium oxidation creates a layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the metal. The layer prevents oxygen from reaching the underlying steel and also resists corrosion. Galvanized Steel

This type of carbon steel is coated with a layer of zinc and acts as a barrier to water and oxygen after completing the galvanization process. The zinc layer restrains the water and oxygen from reaching the steel. As a result, galvanized steel is also rust-free. If the layer is scratched off because of any reason, then it can even protect the surrounding areas of the underlying steel. Keep in mind that aluminum-zinc reacts to moisture and oxygen and protects the iron from oxidation.
